update: Singer Mariah Carey [ tickets ] has been discharged from a Connecticut hospital after a two-week stay for treatment following what her publicist termed "an emotional and physical breakdown." In a statement released on Wednesday (8/8), spokeswoman Cindi Berger said, "Mariah is feeling better. She's resting under a doctor's care and at an undisclosed location with her mother."

Carey’s hospitalization caused her to cancel several promotional appearances, including a headlining slot at MTV's 20th birthday party on Aug. 1.

The release date of Carey's forthcoming album, the soundtrack to the movie "Glitter" (in which she also stars), has been pushed back three weeks to Sept. 11, according to Virgin Records. The film--which stars Carey--originally was slated for an Aug. 24 opening, but its release date was pushed back to Sept. 21 after Carey's hospitalization

Carey checked in to the emergency room on July 25, and witnesses said she had bandages on both wrists and hands at the time, according to a report in the New York Daily News. Contrary to previous reports, Carey did not check herself into the hospital, but instead was admitted after her mother called 911, following a "violent outburst," according to the Daily News. Her publicist acknowledged Carey broke dishes and glasses and "may have stepped on them," but denied tabloid reports that she attempted suicide.

Prior to beginning her stay in the hospital, Carey posted a distressed message on her official website. "What I'd like to do is just a take a little break or at least get one night of sleep without someone popping up about a video," Carey said. "All I really want is to just be me and that's what I should have done in the first place ... I don't say this much but guess what, I don't take care of myself." The message has since been removed.

In the weeks leading up to her hospital stay, Carey was working on filming her second movie "Wise Girls," and promoting "Glitter."
