Widespread Panic sets tour plans for the U.S. and Europe
Athens, Ga.-based jam band Widespread Panic has scheduled a two-week European tour that will be followed by a more extensive run of U.S. dates. Tickets hit the market for many shows in the coming days.
During the first half of 2001, Widespread Panic's North American shows played to nearly 150,000 fans in 18 cities, and grossed $4 million, according to Pollstar. The band is especially popular in the southeastern U.S., where it has sold out multiple nights at arenas in some cities. October's itinerary includes three nights at UNO Lakefront Arena in New Orleans.
The band's album sales have always paled in comparison to its success on the concert circuit. The latest Widespread Panic album, "Don't Tell the Band" (Sanctuary), was released in June and spent six weeks on the Billboard 200 album chart, peaking at No. 57. The CD was the band's first studio recording since 1999's "'Til the Medicine Takes" (Capricorn).
This fall, the band's first live DVD and VHS, titled "Live at Oak Mountain," is scheduled for release. It will feature more than two hours of concert footage from the band's July run at Oak Mountain Amphitheatre in Pelham, Ala.
In other news, Velocette Records (formerly Capricorn) will reissue "Nine High a Pallet"--a 1995 collaboration between Widespread Panic and singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt recorded under the name Brute--on Oct. 9. The enhanced CD will include new artwork and videos for two tracks. Chesnutt recently told Billboard that a second Brute album should be completed by the end of the year.
