Charts: 'Aaliyah' shoots to No. 1 following singer’s death
Consumer reaction to the recent death of Aaliyah will propel the late R&B singer’s final album to the top of the forthcoming Billboard 200 album chart, according to industry sources. The posthumous sales leave Mary J. Blige's new album to debut in the No. 2 slot, followed by Top 10 debuts from Slipknot, Brian McKnight, Toby Keith and Puddle of Mudd.
Sales of “Aaliyah” (Virgin), which totaled about 62,000 copies during the week leading up to the singer’s death, leapt to about 306,000 copies last week. The album, which was released on July 17, originally entered the chart at No. 2. The album had dipped to No. 27 two weeks back, but jumped to No. 19 on last week’s chart immediately after news broke that Aaliyah had been killed in a plane crash on August 25. Blige’s “No More Drama” (MCA) scores a No. 2 debut after moving about 294,000 copies. The album’s first-week sales were spurred on by the hit single “Family Affair.”
“Iowa” (Roadrunner), Slipknot’s sophomore effort, falls in behind Blige’s latest to debut at No. 3 after selling about 255,000 copies. “Left Behind,” the first single from “Iowa,” sits at No. 19 on trade publication Radio & Records’ latest Active Rock chart, which measures national radio airplay.
“Songs in A Minor” (J Records), the debut album from Alicia Keys, stays put at No. 4 for the second consecutive week. Right behind it at No. 5--and down from No. 1 last week--is “Now” (Columbia), the latest from Maxwell, with whom Keys is currently on tour.
“Now That’s What I Call Music! Vol. 7” (Virgin)--which contains previously released hits from Destiny’s Child, Janet Jackson, Backstreet Boys, ‘NSync, Jennifer Lopez and others--dips from No. 3 to No. 6 this week. The album has sold a total of almost 1.7 million copies during its five weeks in stores.
Filling in three of the final four slots on this week’s Top 10 are debuts from Brian McKnight, Toby Keith and Puddle of Mudd. McKnight’s “Superhero” (Motown) clocks in at No. 7, Keith’s “Pull My Chain” (DreamWorks) enters at No. 9 and Puddle of Mudd’s “Come Clean” (Geffen) logs in at No. 10.
Juvenile’s “Project English” (Cash Money/Universal) rounds out the group at No. 8, down from its No. 2 debut of last week.
Debuts occurring outside of the Top 10 include Afroman’s “Good Times” (Universal)--which houses the hit single “Because I Got High”--at No. 14; Björk’s “Vespertine” (Elektra) at No. 19; RZA’s “Digital Bullet” (Koch) at No. 24; and Krayzie Bone’s “Thug on da Line” (Columbia) at No. 27.
