New Releases, Sept. 11: Mariah Carey, Bob Dylan, P.O.D., Babyface
plus: Jamiroquai, Nickelback, Ben Folds , Slayer, DJ Krush, Stone Gossard, Spike 1000, more.
Mariah Carey
“Glitter” (Virgin)
Originally due out on Aug. 21, the soundtrack for Carey’s upcoming film of the same name was delayed when the singer checked herself into a hospital in July, where she was treated for an emotional and physical breakdown. (The film was also delayed, and is now due out on Sept. 21.)
Carey planned to launch the album with a Sept. 12 appearance on ABC’s “20/20”--for which she was to be interviewed by Barbara Walters--and a Sept. 14 performance on NBC’s “The Tonight Show.” Both engagements have since been postponed following reports that Carey has again been hospitalized after suffering a relapse.
Information on the “Glitter” project can be found at Carey’s official website, while a streaming version of the soundtrack album can be heard in its entirety at Virgin’s Mariah Carey Jukebox website.
Bob Dylan
“Love and Theft” (Columbia)
Bob Dylan's 43rd album--and first since 1997's million-selling "Time Out of Mind"--features 12 Dylan compositions that he recorded this spring with his touring band and several guest musicians, including Texas keyboard player Augie Meyers.
Two tracks from the new album are available for download via Dylan's official website for a limited time.
To support the release, Dylan has lined up a two-month U.S. arena tour that gets underway in October. According to his label, Dylan has performed nearly 450 concerts around the world since the release of "Time Out of Mind."

P.O.D.
“Satellite” (Atlantic)
P.O.D.’s latest is the follow-up to the group's major-label debut, 1999’s “Fundamental Elements of South Town.” The new album features the group’s current hit, “Alive,” the companion video for which recently hit the No. 1 spot on MTV’s “Total Request Live.”
The Southern California outfit will launch its new album on Monday night (9/10) with a midnight in-store appearance at the Wherehouse in San Diego, followed on Tuesday (9/11) by an in-store performance at Tower Records in Northridge, Calif. The group is also scheduled to perform on "The Tonight Show" on Friday (9/14).
Though no dates have yet been announced, P.O.D. plans to kick off a headlining U.S. tour on Oct. 18, and the outing is expected to run into December, according to Atlantic Records.
“Fundamental Elements of Southtown,” P.O.D.’s previous release, peaked at No. 51 on the Billboard 200 album chart in April of last year. That album featured the group’s breakthrough hit, “Rock the Party (Off the Hook).”
Babyface
“Face 2 Face” (Nu America/Arista)
Singer, songwriter, producer, record-company exec and multi-instrumentalist Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds returns with his first album of all-new material in five years. The collection marks his first release on his new label, Nu America, after a stint of more than a decade with Sony.
Edmonds has penned and/or produced a long list of hits for himself and others, but the new album is heavy on collaboration. It was co-produced by Nu America president Andre Harrell, and features writing credits from Tim Kelly & Bob Robinson (Boyz II Men), Heavy D and the Neptunes (Ol' Dirty Bastard, Jay-Z), among others.
Among the album's notable tracks is "Baby's Mama," which was written by Edmonds with Snoop Dogg, Damon Thomas and the Megahertz, and features Snoop Dogg.
Samples from five of the album's tracks are available for download on the official Babyface website. The album's first single, the Neptunes-penned track "There She Goes," currently sits at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. The song peaked at No. 3.
Jamiroquai
“A Funk Odyssey” (Epic)
Jamiroquai leader Jay Kay looks inward on the track “A Picture of Me,” featured on his latest release, but longtime fans of the acid-jazzy song-and-dance man shouldn’t expect a light and introspective album. According to Kay’s official website, there are plenty of funky numbers that promise to set dance floors afire.
To coincide with the release of “A Funk Odyssey,” the group is set to play at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom on Monday night (9/10), and will embark on a European tour on Oct. 6.
Jamiroquai’s last release was 1999’s “Synkronized,” which has sold nearly 4 million copies worldwide.
Nickelback
“Silver Side Up” (Roadrunner)
Nickelback’s sophomore effort is the follow-up to the group’s March 2000 release, “The State.” Paving the way for the new release is the album’s first single, “How You Remind Me,” which holds the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s latest Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
On Monday at 7 p.m. Eastern Time, Nickelback is scheduled to participate in an online chat hosted by RockOnline.com.
Nickelback is currently on the road opening for 3 Doors Down, and will kick off a headlining run next month.
Ben Folds
“Rockin’ the Suburbs” (Epic)
The title of Ben Folds’ solo debut suggests that he is ready to storm a mall outside a major city near you. Not quite, but Folds is making a cheeky reference to the commercial success of his now defunct band Ben Folds Five.
“Rockin’ the Suburbs” carries on the snarky lyrics and spirited piano pop of Folds’ previous group, as evidenced by the album’s title track. Streaming video clips of the song are available on Folds’ official website, along with behind-the-scenes footage of the video’s filming.
Folds is backing the album with an already-underway solo tour.
Slayer
“God Hates Us All” (American)
Just short of two decades together, demonic metal band Slayer returns with 13 new tracks. The album marks a break from Slayer's routine of being produced by Rick Rubin (Run D.M.C., Johnny Cash), who famously tapped Slayer guitarist Kerry King to solo on Beastie Boys' 1986 hit, "Fight for Your Right."
Producing instead was Matt Hyde (Monster Magnet, Porno for Pyros), who previously produced Slayer's "Bloodline," a song from the film "Dracula 2000” that also appears on the new album. Rubin mixed the record after Hyde completed production.
“God Hates Us All” is Slayer’s first album with DefJam since Rubin split with his DefJam cofounder, Russell Simmons. (American, Rubin's label, recently inked a distribution deal with Island/DefJam.)
Slayer will appear on the live radio show "Rockline" on Monday (9/10) at 8:30 p.m. Pacific Time, and will do a midnight signing at a Wherehouse store in Corona, CA.

DJ Krush
"Zen" (Red Ant)
"Zen" is the sixth full-length from DJ Krush, a Japanese DJ known for producing atmospheric hip-hop. Originally released on Sony Music in Japan in late January, the U.S. edition of “Zen” includes a bonus remix of the song "Final Home." Featured guests include Zap Mama, N'Dea Davenport and members of the Roots, among others.
Available on DJ Krush’s official website are segments of the video for the Zap Mama collaboration, "Danger of Love," plus audio of several songs off the album.
Krush recently contributed a remix to Herbie Hancock's reunion with Bill Laswell, "Future 2 Future," due out on Sept. 25.
Stone Gossard
“Bayleaf” (Epic)
The Pearl Jam guitarist’s full-fledged solo debut isn’t his first departure from his main gig; he is also the nucleus of a side-project named Brad.
Gossard sang on seven of the album’s 10 tracks, but did not sing “Unhand Me,” the collection’s first single. A streaming version of the entire tune can be found at Gossard’s official website.
Spike 1000
“Waste of Skin” (Portrait/Columbia)
Fronted by female singer Shannon Harris, Spike 1000 will back its forthcoming debut album with performances at several dates on the upcoming Family Values tour.
