The Strokes to crawl the club circuit through November
Highly touted rock band the Strokes will wrap up the first leg of a club tour behind their debut album with a Halloween show at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom. The tour's second leg opens in mid-November.
The New York-based quintet's schedule includes a slot on the Sunday (10/28) bill of the sold out New Yorkers Against Violence Benefit Concert. Beastie Boys, the B-52's and Cibo Matto are among the others on the bill.
A December 2000 residency at New York's Mercury Lounge resulted in many glowing reviews of the band. Its reputation grew from "The Modern Age," a 3-song demo that Rough Trade Records released in January in Great Britain. (Later, XL Recordings/Beggars Group released the EP stateside.) A sold-out U.K. tour followed.
The Strokes ' full-length debut, "Is This It" (RCA), was released on Oct. 9, two weeks later than originally planned. The track "New York City Cops" (which includes the lyric "New York City cops/they ain't so smart") was removed from the album in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks.
"Is This It" sits at No. 84 on the Billboard 200 chart. Less than 40,000 copies of the album have sold to date, according to industry sources.
