'O Brother' musicians plot 2002 tour

update: Fans of the music featured in the film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" will have a chance to see many of those songs performed live when the Down from the Mountain tour hits the road on Friday night (1/25). The outing features artists whose music was used for the film's soundtrack, including Alison Krauss and Union Station, Emmylou Harris , and others.

Krauss' Union Station includes Dan Tyminski, whose voice is featured on the movie's stand-out song, "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow," which actor George Clooney lip-synched in his role as lead character Ulysses Everett McGill. In the film, the song is attributed to McGill's impromptu "ol' timey" group, the Soggy Bottom Boys. The tour's roster will also include Chris Thomas King, who portrayed a guitarist in the film, and the Peasall Sisters, whose singing was featured in the film.

Also on the bill is Ralph Stanley , the Whites, Norman and Nancy Blake, Bob Neuwirth and the Nashville Bluegrass Band and Patty Loveless; Loveless did not appear on the film's soundtrack.

The Down from the Mountain tour takes its name from the live album of the same title, which comprises performances by artists featured on the film's soundtrack. The album was recorded at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium in May 2000--prior to the film's release--and was released last July. A documentary of the event, also titled "Down from the Mountain," was released on DVD and VHS last year.

Organizers decided to launch the upcoming tour after the success of last June's Music from "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" concert at New York City's Carnegie Hall.

More information about the "Down from the Mountain" album, film, tour and artists can be found at the "Down from the Mountain" official website. The site also features a streaming broadcast of music from and inspired by "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

"Down from the Mountain" was recently nominated for a Grammy in the Best Traditional Folk Album category, while the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack is up for several awards, including Album of the Year and Best Compilation Soundtrack. The Grammy Awards will take place on Feb. 27.
