Emmylou Harris assembles artists for benefit tour
For the third year in a row, country singer-songwriter Emmylou Harris will spearhead a short series of December concerts dubbed the "Concerts for a Landmine Free World." Fellow singer-songwriters Mary Chapin Carpenter, Bruce Cockburn , Steve Earle , Patty Griffin and Nanci Griffith will join Harris on the run.
The tour will take place in early December, and stops are set at theaters throughout the Northeast and Midwest.
Griffith will not appear at the tour's final two stops, according to organizers.
All proceeds from the tour will support the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation's (VVAF) programs that assist innocent victims of conflict around the world, and the VVAF's work to raise America's awareness of the global landmine crisis, according to a press release.
Harris' involvement in the VVAF's efforts to bring about a global ban on landmines began in 1997 when she visited Vietnam and Cambodia with VVAF president and co-founder Bobby Muller. Earle and Cockburn have since visited the VVAF's programs in Vietnam and Cambodia.
When the International Campaign to Ban Landmines was awarded the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize, Harris performed at the Nobel Peace Prize concert in Oslo, Norway, along with Sinead O'Connor, Jewel, Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey, according to the VVAF.
In 1998, Harris held benefit concerts for the cause in Los Angeles and Washington D.C., the latter of which featured Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, Lucinda Williams and Steve Earle.
Harris' first full-fledged tour in support of the cause took place in December 1999. That five-date outing also featured Earle, Cockburn, Griffith, Carpenter and Griffin, as well as Terry Allen, Guy Clark, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine and Willie Nelson, all of whom played on various dates.
Last year's outing again featured Earle, Cockburn, Griffith, Carpenter and Prine.
More information about the event can be found at the VVAF's official website.
