Review: Incubus in Detroit

DETROIT--In a 90-minute performance at Detroit's State Theatre on Friday night (11/2), Incubus vocalist Brandon Boyd sang with grace, ease and perfection, and used his hands to spur his band much like a conductor leads an orchestra.

The rest of the group--especially guitarist Mike Einziger--followed Boyd's lead, providing a spirited, tight set that focused on songs from its new record, "Morning View" (Epic).

The 2,500-plus capacity crowd of mostly twenty-something men rushed the stage as Incubus opened its set with "Privilege." Like the band, the audience maintained its energy throughout the show, body surfing and bouncing to each of the songs.

Incubus tore through the hit "Stellar" (which was just that) and "Pardon Me," before large white screens were revealed as backdrops for psychedelic lights and slide shows. A rush of blue lights greeted the crowd during "When It Comes."

Boyd and Einziger broke away from the band to perform an acoustic rendition of the ballad "Mexico." Boyd took the opportunity to tease Einziger for his choice in clothing.

"New shoes, new cords--is it your birthday?" Boyd said with a laugh.

Midway through the hit "Drive," the rest of the band rejoined the duo, making for a striking version of the song. DJ Kilmore’s scratching revved the crowd and inspired Boyd to ham it up during the song, playfully pointing at the body surfers.

Boyd shyly told the audience he was proud that "Morning View" debuted at No. 2 last week, and thanked them for their support. Late in the performance, he showed off his musical abilities by whipping out his trademark bongo drums and Australian didgeridoo, a wooden Aboriginal instrument that resembles a long, hollow stick.

The first single from "Morning View," "Wish You Were Here," was saved until deep in the set.

From the beginning, it was clear that Incubus didn’t belong in a small venue, and is poised to be the next big arena act.
