Smash Mouth gears up for new album, tour
Three days after the Nov. 27 release of its forthcoming album, alt-rock act Smash Mouth plans to launch a U.S. tour that will carry the group into 2002.
Titled "Smash Mouth," the group's third studio effort is the follow-up to its triple-platinum 1999 release, "Astro Lounge," which featured the hit single "All Star." That song turns up on the August soundtrack for "Rat Race" and the May soundtrack for "Shrek."
The "Shrek" soundtrack also features the group's cover of "I'm a Believer," the Neil Diamond-penned tune made popular by the Monkees. After peaking at No. 4, Smash Mouth's version of the song currently sits at No. 15 in its 19th week on Billboard's Adult Top 40 chart.
"Pacific Coast Party," the first single from "Smash Mouth," holds spots on Billboard's current Top 40 Mainstream and Adult Top 40 charts. The group launched the music video for "Pacific Coast Party" with a Halloween-day appearance on MTV's "Total Request Live."
"Fush Yu Mang," the group's major-label debut, featured the breakthrough hit "Walkin' on the Sun."
Smash Mouth's outing in support of its new album will begin in the Midwest, a region that it originally planned to tour this summer. Those plans were scrapped following the death of band frontman Steve Harwell's infant son, Presley Scott, in late July. Harwell's son was diagnosed on July 26 with acute lymphatic leukemia, and died two days later from complications due to the disease.
Harwell and his wife, Michelle, have since launched the Presley Scott Research Foundation for Leukemia. Information on donating to the foundation is available at Smash Mouth's official website.
Smash Mouth's upcoming tour itinerary also includes a New Year's Eve performance at Planet Hollywood in New York City's Times Square, and three January 2002 dates in Nevada.
