Aimee Mann, Michael Penn Ready For The Road
The husband/wife team of Aimee Mann and Michael Penn , both folk-tinged pop singer/songwriters whose recent work has earned them more critical success than retail success, will take to the road at month's end for a club tour. Though brief, the tour will reach both coasts.
Mann is still best known for the hit ''Voices Carry,'' from her days as the lead singer of 80s pop group 'Til Tuesday. Since then, her career has been slowed by well-documented troubles with record companies. As a solo artist, she jumped to the doomed Imago label after receiving what she termed inadequate support from her former label Epic Records.
After Imago's demise, she was picked up by Geffen Records. Geffen was then absorbed by Seagram's Interscope label, and during the bloodletting that followed, Mann was dropped. She has since worked without long-term major label ties, but her nine songs make up the core of the ''Magnolia'' soundtrack album, which was released in December by Reprise Records.
According to her official website, Mann will independently release her next album, ''Bachelor No. 2,'' an album originally recorded for Geffen, either this month or next.
Like Mann, Penn--the brother of actor Sean--logged a hit single in the 80s (''No Myth''), and quickly became the victim of a label shake-up. His latest album, ''MP4 (Days Since A Lost Time Accident)'' is set to be released on Feb. 1 by Epic's 57 Records imprint.
