Charts: Britney Spears logs her third straight No. 1 debut
Britney Spears ' third album, the eponymous "Britney," will top the next edition of the Billboard 200 album chart thanks to first-week sales of about 746,000 copies, according to industry sources. The album is joined in the Top 10 by debuts from Pink Floyd and George Strait.
Brisk sales of "Britney" have garnered the album the second highest first-week total of the year, behind 'NSync's "Celebrity," which moved about 1.8 million copies in its first week out. Spears' 2000 release, "Oops! … I Did It Again," sold about 1.4 million in its chart-topping debut week, and holds the record for highest first-week sales by a female artist. Spears' 1999 debut, " … Baby One More Time," also debuted at No. 1.
A half-million copies behind "Britney" is the No. 2 debut of Pink Floyd's "Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd" (Capitol), a two-disc set that chronicles the band's career.
The new debuts at the top of the chart push both Michael Jackson's "Invincible" (Epic) and Enrique Iglesias' "Escape" (Interscope)--which last week debuted in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively--down two notches each to No. 3 and No. 4.
The only Top 10 album not displaced by this week's activity is Enya's "A Day Without Rain" (Reprise), which will stay put at No. 5 for the second week in a row.
DMX's "The Great Depression" (Def Jam) and Backstreet Boys' "Hits -- Chapter One" (Jive)--which last week sat at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively--drop three spots each to No. 6 and No. 7 this week. Following at No. 8, meanwhile, is Nickelback's "Silver Side Up" (Roadrunner), down from No. 6 last week.
Debuting at No. 9 is "The Road Less Traveled" (MCA Nashville), the latest from country veteran George Strait. The album features Strait's latest hit, "Run," which sits at No. 7 on trade publication Radio & Records' latest Country airplay chart.
Closing out the Top 10 is rapper Ja Rule's "Pain Is Love" (Def Jam), which has now broken the million-sales mark, according to industry sources.
Falling just short of a Top 10 debut is Petey Pablo's "Diary of a Sinner: 1st Entry" (Jive) at No. 13 and Faith Evans' "Faithfully" (Bad Boy/Arista) at No. 14.
Other debuts include "The Wash" soundtrack (Interscope) at No. 19, Angie Stone's "Mahogany Soul" (J Records) at No. 22, Third Day's "Come Together" (Brentwood) at No. 31 and Tony Bennett's "Playin with My Friends: Tony Bennett Sings the Blues" (Columbia) at No. 50.
