Charts: Despite big sales drop, Creed's 'Weathered' still No. 1
A significant post-holiday drop-off in album sales will do little to change the titles occupying the forthcoming Billboard 200 album chart's Top 10, all but one of which were part of last week's group. The pack is again headed by Creed 's "Weathered," which will claim the top spot for the seventh consecutive week.
"Weathered" (Wind-Up) sees its one-week sales total dip to about 165,000 copies for the first week of 2002, a roughly 58 percent drop from its Christmas-week sales of about 398,000 copies, according to industry sources. The album remains about 40,000 copies ahead of Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory" (Warner Bros.), which will spends its second week at No. 2. The latter album was recently crowned the top-selling album of 2001.
Ludacris' "Word of Mouf" (Def Jam), which last week jumped 12 spots to No. 4, moves up another notch, as does Nickelback's "Silver Side Up" (Roadrunner), placing the albums in the Nos. 3 and 4 spots, respectively.
Though sales of practically every album in the Top 100 generally sank at least 50 percent this week, only one Top 10 album loses ground on the chart: "Now That's What I Call Music! Vol. 8" (Virgin) will drop from No. 3 to No. 5.
The latter half of the Top 10 comprises Enya's "A Day Without Rain," which is up one spot to No. 6; Ja Rule's "Pain Is Love" (Def Jam), up one spot to No. 7; Pink's "Missundaztood" (LaFace/Arista), up two places to No. 8; Nas' "Stillmatic" (Columbia), which stays put at No. 9 for the second consecutive week; and No Doubt's "Rock Steady" (Interscope), which squeaks its way back into the Top 10 after spending the previous week at No. 11.
Making room for "Rock Steady" is Usher's "8701" (LaFace/Arista), which, with a drop from No. 6 to No. 11, is the only album ducking out of the Top 10 this time around.
A moratorium on new releases during the first week of the new year results in no newcomers on this week's chart.
