Patti Smith compilation due in March, tour in the works

Arista Records will release a 2-CD Patti Smith compilation titled "Land 1975-2002" on March 19. The album includes one disc of previously released material and another consisting entirely of previously unreleased material.

The songs on the first disc--most of which are from the eight studio albums that Smith has recorded for Arista--were culled from more than 10,000 votes cast by fans on the Internet and on Smith's recent tours.

According to Arista, the second disc features demos and alternate takes, live tracks, poetry and other rarities, including her recording of Prince's "When Doves Cry."

The liner notes for the package were written by Susan Sontag, who won the 2001 National Book Award for "In America." The compilation also includes a 36-page booklet featuring previously unavailable photos, notes, original lyrics and drawings from Smith's archives.

Smith and her band--which features Lenny Kaye, Oliver Ray, Tony Shanahan, and Jay Dee Daugherty--plan to launch a tour in conjunction with the album's release. Details haven't been announced.
