Briefly: Springsteen, E Street Band hole up in Atlanta studio
plus: Lifehouse prepares to enter the studio. Early Waylon Jennings compiled. Depeche Mode pay-per-view concert. Wallflowers update. Spin editor stepping down.
Backstreets.com, a popular Bruce Springsteen fan site, reported last week that Springsteen and members of the E Street Band were working on new material at Southern Tracks Studio in Atlanta in late January. Producer Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots) reportedly was at the helm. The following day, E Street Band guitarist Nils Lofgren--as a guest on ESPN radio's Tony Kornheiser Show--confirmed that the group was recording and that the Atlanta sessions were "the first step of what would have to be many."
Lifehouse is scheduled to begin recording its follow-up to its breakthrough 2000 album "No Name Face" in March, according to Dreamworks Records.
Twenty of Waylon Jennings' first recordings--including two songs produced by Buddy Holly (in whose backing band, the Crickets, Jennings played for a time)--will make their U.S. debuts on CD on March 5, when Hip-O Records issues "Phase One: The Early Years 1958-1964." All but one selection on the CD ("Just To Satisfy You'') are covers.
A Depeche Mode pay-per-view concert dubbed "One Night in Paris, The Exciter Tour," directed by Anton Corbijn, is scheduled to debut on March 8 on In Demand, TVN, Echostar, and DirecTV. The band's sold-out 2001 performance at Palais Omnisports de Paris Bercy was recorded for the pay-per-view event.
The Wallflowers are expected to release their fourth studio album in June on Interscope Records, and are also planning a summer tour, RollingStone.com reported.
Alan Light, who has served as editor-in-chief of Spin magazine since 1999, will be stepping down in March and plans to launch a new magazine, Vibe/Spin Ventures announced. Executive editor Sia Michel will act as interim editor-in-chief.
