Lenny Kravitz, Blues Traveler top New Orleans Jazz Fest 2002 lineup
Grammy-nominated singer India.Arie, Blues Traveler, Lenny Kravitz and Jimmy Buffett are among the big names scheduled to perform at the 33rd annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
Other notable pop and rock performers include Counting Crows and Melissa Etheridge. The seven-day festival runs on two consecutive weekends, April 26-28 and May 2-5, at the New Orleans Fair Grounds. The festival's evening concert series will also feature its share of top-tier acts, including Kravitz and Etheridge.
The 2002 lineup closely mirrors those of recent years, supplementing a heavy focus on Louisiana-indigenous forms--jazz, rhythm and blues, Cajun and zydeco--with a collection of current chart toppers and sturdy touring bands. One trend that this year's schedule continues is an increasing jam-band presence. In addition to Blues Traveler (occupying the high-profile slot held by Widespread Panic and Phish in past years), other participants include String Cheese Incident and Gov't Mule, as well as two post-Grateful Dead projects: Phil Lesh & Friends and Bob Weir's Ratdog.
One new wrinkle is the debut of the Blues Tent, which will be devoted specifically to blues acts. The tent will be the largest of the festival's freestanding performance tents, with a capacity of over 3,000, according to the festival's website.
