Mark Knopfler injured in motorcycle accident

Singer-songwriter Mark Knopfler suffered two broken ribs and a broken collarbone in a motorcycle accident on Monday (3/17), according to his U.K. label publicist.

According to a statement, Knopfler was riding his motorcycle through London, on his way to start rehearsals for his upcoming tour, when he was knocked from the bike during a collision with a car.

As a result of the accident, the former Dire Straits frontman has called off his planned performance with Eric Clapton on March 25 at London's Royal Albert Hall. The show, which will aid the Teenage Cancer Trust, will go on with Clapton and Nigel Kennedy and Friends.

Knopfler is scheduled to open a month-long North American tour on April 23. There was no immediate word as to whether or not those shows were in danger of being postponed or canceled.

"Ragpickers Dream," Knopfler's latest album, was released last October.

Knopfler rose to fame during his years fronting Dire Straits, the popular rock act best known for its hits "Money for Nothing"--an MTV staple--and "Sultans of Swing." The group disbanded in 1995.
