Celebration 2000 Is Scaled Back Due To Poor Ticket Sales
Celebration 2000, a New York event that was to feature Sting , Andrea Bocelli , Aretha Franklin , Enrique Iglesias , Chuck Berry and others, has been scaled back as organizers seek another venue due to slow ticket sales. Ticket prices were to be in the $1,000 to $2,500 range, but now will reportedly be slashed to the $75 to $375 range.
As originally planned, the New Year's Eve event at New York's Javits Convention Center was to be a $25 million production that included a gourmet meal and five different stages of entertainment. The first 2,000 people to purchase tickets were to be whisked to the event in limousines.
Event producer Steve Leber told the New York Daily News that those who paid the $1,000 to $2,500 for tickets will be offered refunds. Organizers are reportedly devising a system to dole out partial refunds to ticket-holders who want to attend the scaled-back event.
Organizers have reportedly cut Enrique Iglesias, Chuck Berry and the Duke Ellington Orchestra from the bill, and Tom Jones' status for the show isn't certain. Organizers expect Sting, Andrea Bocelli and Aretha Franklin to perform at a reconfigured show at an as-yet-unknown venue, but Franklin is reportedly in negotiations to perform at a New Year's Eve event planned for the Lincoln Memorial.
The New York announcement comes on the heels of the cancellation of Jewel's New Year's Eve show in Alaska. And earlier this year, a major celebration at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum featuring Los Lobos was called off when organizers decided that the event wouldn't be a money-maker.
A recent CNN/Time poll found that 72% of Americans aren't planning to do ''something special'' on New Year's Eve, up from 63% in a similar poll that was taken in January. Just 21% of the respondents said that they plan to travel away from home for the holiday.
