Paul McCartney, Avril Lavigne contribute to War Child benefit album
Paul McCartney , Avril Lavigne , Celine Dion and David Bowie are among the artists who have contributed tracks to "Peace Songs," an album that will benefit War Child Canada, an organization that helps children affected by war.
The album, scheduled for release on April 15, will also feature material from Bryan Adams, Jann Arden, Barenaked Ladies , Michelle Branch, Bruce Cockburn, Leonard Cohen, Gord Downie, In Essence, Garou, Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), K-OS, Chantal Kreviazuk, Kyprios, Moby, Our Lady Peace and David Usher.
According to a press release, all artists have donated songs "with timely messages of peace and hope." Some artists have re-recorded versions of classic songs about peace, while others have composed new songs for the project.
McCartney was among the artists who recorded an exclusive track--a re-recorded version of his 1997 song "Calico Skies." "Whatever the politics, whatever the rights and wrongs of war, children are always the innocent victims," McCartney said in a statement. "I am delighted to be able to make this small contribution to a magnificent project."
Avril Lavigne recorded Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" for the set, while Islam re-recorded his hit "Peace Train." Bowie contributed a remix of his song "Everyone Says Hi." Moby kicked in a new song titled "Nearer."
More information about War Child Canada can be found at the organization's website.
Another version of the album, titled "War Child: Hope," will be released in the U.K. on April 22. The album shares some tracks with the Canadian version, but also includes more British artists. Among its tracks is a new song from Travis titled "The Beautiful Occupation" and George Michael's cover of Don McClean's "The Grave." A full track listing and more information can be found at War Child's U.K. website.
