Chart-Topper D'Angelo Sets Tour Plans

With D'Angelo's sophomore release now topping the U.S. album charts for a second consecutive week, tour plans that will take the critically lauded R&B artist to more than 25 cities in two months have emerged. "Voodoo" sold 321,000 copies in its first week of release, five years after his debut album, according to Virgin Records.

The Richmond, Va., native--who writes, produces, sings and plays many of the instruments on his albums--has already sold out a week of dates at the House of Blues near Los Angeles, according to the label. Tickets for D'Angelo's performances in Philadelphia on March 21 and 22 go on sale Friday (2/12), and tickets for his March 24 performance in Washington, D.C., are tentatively set to go on sale Feb. 17. Onsale dates for tickets in other markets haven't been announced.

D'Angelo began playing the piano at age 5, and was a three-time winner on "Amateur Night at the Apollo" by the time he was 18. He signed his first publishing deal in 1991, which led to a record deal on the now-defunct EMI label. His 1995 EMI release "Brown Sugar" went double-platinum.

The buzz for "Voodoo" began to build with the October release of the single "Left & Right,'' which features rappers Method Man and Redman. A video for the album's second single, "Untitled (How Does It Feel)," features D'Angelo sans clothing, and has received heavy play from MTV.

"Voodoo" was recorded at New York's Electric Ladyland studio, which was made famous by Jimi Hendrix.
