Performers line up Rhode Island club-fire benefit

Billy Gilman, Blackhawk and Rick Derringer are among the acts that will perform during a concert to benefit victims of the Station nightclub fire in Rhode Island.

Also scheduled to appear are Phoebe Snow, John Anthony, Justincase, Vanilla Fudge, Randy Jackson, Paul Shortino, James Montgomery with John Cafferty and Larry Hoppen, Lennon, Rickey Medlocke, the Southern Rock All Stars (consisting of former members of Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot and the Rossington Band), and others to be named.

Berklee College of Music students will serve as back-up musicians and accompanists where needed.

The show takes place on April 22 at the Providence Performing Arts Center, and all proceeds will benefit the Station Fire Nightclub Relief Fund, according to a statement issued by Rhode Island Gov. Donald Carcieri. All performers are donating their time, and local businesses are supplying complimentary transportation, lodging and catering. The venue is donating the use of its facilities.

"I am pleased to see this ongoing effort to help the victims of this horrible tragedy," Carcieri said in a statement. "The long-term needs of many of these folks may continue for years to come. It's important that the funds are there to help them when they need it."

Tickets are priced at $35, $40, and $50, and are being sold at the venue box office and the office of promoter Century Productions in Warwick, R.I. For ticket information, contact the venue at 421-2997, or Century Productions at 739-6889.

On Feb. 20, a fire that eventually claimed the lives of 99 victims destroyed The Station--a nightclub in West Warwick, R.I.--during a Great White concert. Great White guitarist Ty Longley was among those killed. Nearly 200 victims were hospitalized in the wake of the fire.

This week, Great White frontman Jack Russell--via a statement on his official website, issued his first message to fans since the fire.

"I could not keep silent for one more night," he wrote. "I have been quietly reading your posts for the last 6 weeks. The love, support, and encouragement that most of you have expressed to us, both on this site, and personally has been overwhelming. Some of your posts have literally taken me through the darkest days and nights I have ever known, and I just wanted to say thank you on behalf of all of us for taking the time to let us know you are out there, encouraging us to keep doing what we do.

"Words will not now, nor will they ever, begin to express the sorrow we are all feeling not only for the loss of our Ty, but for everyone that was affected by this terrible tragedy. I just couldn't let one more day go by without saying thank you to those of you that have always been more than fans, even more than friends, more like family to all of us.

"God bless all of you."
