George Jones spreads the gospel with massive tour
George Jones ' near-fatal 1999 car accident led the country singer to create his new gospel album, which he'll support with a lengthy 2003 road trip.
Titled "The Gospel Collection," Jones' latest release hit stores on April 1. The two-disc set houses Jones' interpretations of two-dozen spirituals, including "Amazing Grace,"(I assume) "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot."
From now through April 24, Country Music Television is streaming one track each day from "The Gospel Collection" at its website.
The religious-themed material is a departure for Jones, whose previous works have largely comprised more mainstream country fare. The shift follows a March 1999 incident during which an under-the-influence Jones crashed his SUV into a Nashville bridge.
The then-67-year-old singer, who has battled various addictions over the course of his career, suffered a collapsed lung and punctured liver. He pled guilty to DWI and open-container violations, and subsequently entered an alcohol-treatment program.
At the time of his sentencing, Jones told reporters: "I look for this to be my final wake-up call. I think I'm going to have my life straightened out after this."
