Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon join forces for tour

Classic rockers Journey , Styx and REO Speedwagon look to draw crowds this spring and summer by teaming up for a triple bill that will canvas the U.S.

The outing kicks off in Las Vegas on May 10, and dates currently stretch into mid July. Tickets for a number of shows are on sale now, with others due to hit the box office this month. Details are posted in the tour section at Journey's website.

Last week, Journey members Neal Schon (guitar), Steve Augieri (vocals) and Jonathan Cain (keys, vocals); Styx members Tommy Shaw (guitar, vocals), James "JY" Young (guitar, vocals); and REO Speedwagon members Kevin Cronin (vocals) and Dave Amato (guitar, vocals) hooked up in New York for a jam session.

"We played a variety of REO, Journey and Styx songs, all unplugged," Cronin said in a message posted on his band's website. "Having all these great singers together in harmony took all of the songs to a very special place. Tommy Shaw is such an incredible singer, and Steve Augieri has taken over and made the Journey song list his own."

Shaw, in a message posted on Styx's website, added: "With Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain and Steve Augeri, Kevin Cronin and Dave Amato, alongside JY and me, all playing each other's songs, the weight of our histories became very clear. ... All these great singers singing those songs with Neal shredding away on guitar. ... The muscle of all these masters was moving beyond belief."

The group's jam session will be broadcast on VH1 in the "not too distant future," according to Shaw.

Styx is touring in support of a new album titled "Cyclorama," which surfaced in February. REO Speedwagon's most-recent release is 2001's "Live: Plus." That same year, Styx and REO Speedwagon--who have toured together frequently in recent years--co-released the live set "Arch Allies."

Journey released a four-song EP last November. The set followed the band's most-recent full-length album, 2001's "Arrival."
