Billy Joel and Elton John cancel Toronto date due to SARS scare
Billy Joel and Elton John called off Monday's (4/28) concert in Toronto following the World Health Organization's recent advisory that travelers should avoid the city because of the SARS virus.
A message posted at John's website said that the tour's producers "have been advised against the show taking place in the interest of public health in Toronto and other concert stops by the EJ/BJ tour, potentially jeopardizing the remainder of the tour."
The message goes on to explain that the tour's organizers are taking extra caution because the tour employs almost 100 people who are due to return to their homes "around the world" following the early-May finale.
No make-up date is planned, so the show is being treated as a cancellation rather than a postponement.
Beginning on Friday (5/2), ticketholders can get a refund at the point of purchase. Customers who purchased tickets by phone or via the Internet will receive refunds automatically, according to organizers.
To appease Toronto-area fans, John's camp announced that the singer may schedule a stop in the city during his own headlining run through Eastern Canada, which is scheduled to take place in November.
Ironically, on Tuesday (4/29), the WHO--following extreme pressure from the Canadian government--withdrew its warning against nonessential travel to Toronto.
Joel and John are nearing the end of their latest co-headlining run. The outing is due to wrap up in Rosemont, Ill., on May 8.
