'Weird Al' Yankovic outlines plans for album and tour
Musical satirist "Weird Al" Yankovic returns on May 20 with a new album titled "Poodle Hat," which he'll back with a three-month U.S. summer tour.
Among the artists Yankovic spoofs on the new album are Eminem, Avril Lavigne and Nelly.
The lead track is titled "Couch Potato," and is performed to the tune of the Eminem hit "Lose Yourself." According to Yankovic's publicist, there won't be a video for the track.
"Eminem gave his blessings for the parody of 'Lose Yourself,' but he felt uncomfortable with Al making a video for 'Couch Potato,'" a Yankovic press release said. "Eminem sees 'Lose Yourself' as an important hip-hop song with a strong legacy and is afraid that a Weird Al video might detract from that."
The album also includes parodies of Backstreet Boys and Billy Joel songs, as well as the accordion medley "Angry White Boy Polka," which targets The White Stripes and Rage Against the Machine, among others.
"Poodle Hat" also features the original Yankovic compositions "Hardware Store," "Party at the Leper Colony," "Wanna B Ur Lovr," "Why Does this Always Happen to Me" (which features a guest performance by Ben Folds), "Bob" (an homage to Dylan) and "Genius in France" (a 9-minute tribute to Frank Zappa featuring a guitar cameo by his son Dweezil).
Yankovic and his long-time band--Jim West on guitar, Steve Jay on bass and Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz on drums--launch their tour on June 19 in the San Diego area.
According to a press release, "the Weird Al concert experience is a high-energy, multimedia extravaganza complete with hilarious video montages and elaborate costume changes."
