Sammy Hagar sets up free concert to help N.Y.C. firefighters
Next Monday (5/19)--one day before his new live album hits stores--Sammy Hagar will give a free performance in New York City to help the city's firefighters raise awareness of potential firehouse closures.
The concert is set to take place at Battery Park--near the site where the twin towers of the World Trade Center formerly stood--at noon, and is "part of the continuing effort by city firefighters and Uniformed Firefighters Association to educate New Yorkers about the looming public safety danger for civilians and firefighters if [New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg] goes ahead with his plan to close firehouses," according to a press release.
Bloomberg recently announced plans to close eight firehouses in order to save $11 million, a measure that the mayor says would help close the city's $3.8 billion budget deficit.
"To find $11 million in a $44 billion city budget is like finding a nickel in the couch," Uniformed Firefighters Association president Stephen Cassidy said in a statement. "We are grateful that Sammy Hagar has come to us ... to lend his support for our cause. Not only is Sammy an incredible talent, he is a friend our firefighters can depend on."
"I figured it was time to make some serious noise," said Hagar in a statement, "just in case the mayor hadn’t heard the message from my brothers and sisters at the FDNY."
This summer, Hagar will tour the U.S. to back his May 20 release, "Sammy Hagar & the Wabo's Live Hallelujah."
