Fountains of Wayne deliver new album, tour

Pop-rockers Fountains of Wayne issue their third album on June 10, and back it in July with a month of dates at major clubs throughout the U.S.

The critically acclaimed New York-based quartet--led by songwriters Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood, and fleshed out by guitarist Jody Porter (formerly of The Belltower) and drummer Brian Young (formerly of the Posies)--hasn't released an album of new material since 1999's "Utopia Parkway."

Schlesinger and Collingwood produced the new CD, "Welcome Interstate Managers," with longtime collaborator Mike Denneen. The album features guest appearances from pedal-steel player Robert Randolph, former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha and singer/songwriter Jen Trynin, among others.

According to a press release, the new album tackles "such time-honored pop subjects as love, work, frustrated commuters, drunken salesmen, retired airline pilots, pressured quarterbacks, bad waitresses, vegan entrepreneurs, clip-on ties, exploding cell phones, lawn mowing, vacations without the kids, New England snowstorms, lousy directions, and, of course, 'Face the Nation.'"

Collingwood and Schlesinger--who named their band after a lawn-ornament store in Wayne, N.J.--released their debut album in 1996. Their best-known songs include "Radiation Vibe" and "Sink to the Bottom."

That same year, Schlesinger penned the theme to the Tom Hanks movie "That Thing You Do!"
