Tracy Chapman beefs up North American tour itinerary
Singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman , who next month kicks off a summer run in support of last year's "Let It Rain," has lined up a solid string of dates that runs into early August.
Joseph Arthur--a singer-songwriter who is a native of Chapman's home state of Ohio--and up-and-coming act Eastmountainsouth will open during the outing.
"Let it Rain," Chapman's sixth album, arrived in stores last October. She co-produced the 12-song set with John Parish (PJ Harvey, Eels), and recorded it with a core group of musicians that included drummer Joey Waronker, bassist Andy Stoller, keyboard-player Patrick Warren, and guitarists Joe Gore, Steve Hunter and Greg Leisz.
Earlier this year, Elektra issued a limited-edition version of "Let it Rain" that contains a bonus CD featuring five live tracks that were recorded in November of 2002 in Berlin for a French-German television show.
Chapman burst onto the mainstream scene with her self-titled 1988 debut album, which featured the runaway hit "Fast Car." That album has sold more than 6 million copies in the U.S. to date. Chapman also enjoyed widespread success with her 1996 album "New Beginning," which spawned the Top 10 single "Give Me One Reason"; the album has shipped five million copies in the U.S., according to the Recording Industry Association of America.
Joseph Arthur, whom Peter Gabriel discovered in the mid-'90s, issued his most-recent album, "Redemption's Son," last November.
Eastmountainsouth--a.k.a. multi-instrumentalist and singer Peter Adams, and singer-guitarist Kat Maslich--plans to release its self-titled debut on June 17.
