Eels slip through North American clubs
With a new album now in stores, Eels --the constantly mutating project of singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mark Oliver Everett--are readying for a summer on the road.
"This album is called 'Shootenany,' which is a word I made up when I realized it's only a matter of time before we need some MTV-style street catch phrase for 'shooting spree,' said Everett--also known as E--in his record-company biography. "I thought I should be the one to coin the term. It's a hip, 'edgy' catch phrase for something so serious and so ugly and so likely to happen at any moment. To me, it kind of sums up the times that we live in."
"Shootenany" is the fifth Eels studio album, and is streaming in its entirety at the group's official website. The site also features the music video for the album's first single, "Saturday Morning."
Everett's core backing band on the new album includes Koool G Murder (bass, keyboards, guitar), Butch (drums, vibes), Lisa Germano (violin, vocals) and Joe Gore (guitar, keyboards).
The tour gets underway with three mid-June warm-up dates in Southern California before it heads to Europe. A month of North American dates kicks off in July.
"Something strange has happened to me," Everett said. "I used to hate touring. Now I just want to get back to it. I was really sad when the last tour ended. There's something great about always moving."
