Country Labels Strategize Holiday Push
Country music's top stars--including the monstrously successful Garth Brooks , Shania Twain , Reba McEntire and George Strait --are rolling out a flurry of new and repackaged releases in time for the holiday shopping season.
A week after he releases his holiday album ''Garth Brooks & The Magic Of Christmas,'' (Capitol Nashville), Brooks will host a Dec. 1 Christmas special of the same name. He also continues to aggressively push the rock album of his alter-ego, Chris Gaines.
Twain was initially expected to release a Christmas album this year, but that project has been pushed back. So rather than face the holiday season with a lack of new material from its marquee artist, Twain's record company, Mercury Nashville, will attempt to get more mileage from her two-year-old release, ''Come On Over.''
The new version of ''Come On Over,'' scheduled for release on Nov. 23, sports a new cover and remixes of 15 of the album's 16 songs, but it doesn't include any new material. With more than 13 million copies sold to date, ''Come On Over'' trails only Alanis Morrisette's ''Jagged Little Pill'' (16 million sold) for the title of best-selling album in history by a female artist.
Twain is also about to embark on an East Coast tour that will run through early December.
Strait has released the holiday compilation ''Merry Christmas Wherever You Are'' (MCA Nashville), and his label continues to market his March release ''Always Never The Same'' with the hope that it winds up in Christmas stockings.
A Nov. 23 date has been set for the new Reba McEntire release ''So Good Together'' (MCA Nashville), which will get a push from a ''Live By Request'' show on the A&E cable network as well as a ''Biography'' devoted to the artist. McEntire also recently released a new holiday record, ''Secret Of Giving,'' and will star in a made-for-TV movie of the same name that will air on Thanksgiving.
Notable country stars who have released or will release new albums in time for the holidays include Faith Hill, LeAnn Rimes, Brooks & Dunn, The Mavericks, Alan Jackson, Dolly Parton, Trace Adkins, Ty Herndon and Keith Harling.
Among country artists with newly released or soon-to-be released holiday-themed albums for 1999 are Riders In The Sky, Kenny Rogers, Martina McBride, Bryan White, SheDAISY, and Paul Brandt.
