Original Duran Duran lineup reunites for album, tour

Duran Duran 's original five members are celebrating the band's 25th anniversary by reuniting for a tour of the U.S. and Japan, and plan to release a new album next year.

The outing will mark the first time in 18 years that John Taylor (bass), Nick Rhodes (keyboards) Simon Le Bon (vocals) Andy Taylor (guitar) and Roger Taylor (drums) have performed together; the original quintet last played at 1985's Live Aid, according to the band's publicist.

The group's brief Japanese run takes place July 7-11. Tickets for the July 11 performance at Tokyo's famous Budokan sold out in less than 30 minutes. The U.S. run, meanwhile, kicks off at the Pacific Amphitheater in Orange County, Calif., on July 16, though no additional U.S. dates have yet been revealed.

Fans will be able to purchase CD recordings of the band's Japanese concert, as Duran Duran has cut a deal with music website TheMusic.com. Dubbed "Duran Duran Encore Series," the limited-edition, two-disc sets will be "complete, unedited recordings, taken and mixed each night from the soundboard," according to a press release.

Duran Duran is the second group to make such an arrangement with TheMusic.com; the company released 25 shows recorded during the Who's 2002 U.S. tour.

This fall, Duran Duran heads into the studio to record a new album that it plans to release in 2004. In the meantime, on Tuesday (6/10), Capitol Records releases a 13-CD boxed set that features all of the singles that the band's original lineup released during its '80s-era heyday. Each disc contains a hit single and the original B-side tracks that were released with it, as well as original artwork. Altogether, the set contains 40 tracks.

On Aug. 5, Capitol plans to release remastered versions of the albums "Duran Duran" (1981), which includes the hits "Girls on Film" and "Planet Earth"; and "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" (1983), which includes the hit "The Reflex."

More information about the group's current plans are posted at its official website.
