The Rolling Stones, AC/DC top Toronto benefit bill
The Rolling Stones , AC/DC, The Guess Who , Justin Timberlake , Sam Roberts and The Flaming Lips are among the acts appearing at "Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto," a benefit concert to help the city's sagging tourism industry.
"We're looking forward to coming back to Toronto," the Stones said in a statement. "We've rehearsed in Toronto for our last three tours and it is one of our very favorite cities. We're really pleased to be part of an exciting event that will bring people back to Toronto."
Also on the bill for the July 30 show at the city's Downsview Park are Kathleen Edwards, The Isley Brothers, Sass Jordan and La Chicane. Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi will host the eight-hour event, which will conclude with a full set by the Stones.
Tickets hit the market on Friday (6/27) throughout North America, according to organizers. A dollar from every ticket sold--plus all net proceeds from the concert--will be donated to Toronto's newly created Health Care and Hospitality Workers Relief Fund.
According to organizers, multiple video screens and special sound equipment will be brought into Downsview Park for the event, and a block of tickets has been allocated for US and international fans.
Convention, hotel and restaurant business has been down in Toronto due to SARS fears, and many acts have canceled Toronto tour stops in recent months.
Last Saturday (6/21), a long list of Canadian stars including Avril Lavigne, Sarah McLachlan and Barenaked Ladies performed at another major concert event that aimed to promote the city as a safe tourist destination.
"Our goal is to showcase Toronto to the world and put tourism in Ontario firmly back on the road to recovery," said Brian Coburn Ontario's Minister of Tourism and Recreation, in a statement. "Events like this, along with our hugely successful Concert for Toronto this past weekend, are providing Toronto with more events for thousands of residents and visitors to enjoy."
