Liz Phair ends lengthy road absence with new album and tour

Former lo-fi rocker Liz Phair ends a four-year touring hiatus with a summer outing that supports her first album since 1998's "whitechocolatespaceegg."

The jaunt kicks off on July 21, and is currently scheduled to hit clubs throughout the U.S. until late August. Jason Mraz and Sondre Lerche hold down the opening slots.

Phair's latest release--for which she enlisted slick producers and studio musicians--is a self-titled set that landed in stores on Tuesday (6/24). The collection features guests Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre's bassist and co-writer/producer of 50 Cent's hit "In Da Club"), drummer Matt Chamberlain, bassist Wendy Melvoin (Prince and the Revolution) and Pete Yorn.

"Why Can't I?," the album's first single, is making its way up Billboard's Adult Top 40 chart, where it currently sits at No. 20. Production guru The Matrix (Avril Lavigne) co-produced and co-wrote the track.

Phair's website houses a streaming version of "Why Can't I?," and also features a seven-minute montage of all 14 tracks on "Liz Phair."

In addition to her upcoming tour, Phair's promotional activity includes an appearance this Friday (6/27) on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," and an online chat that MSN.com will host on Monday (6/30). Details and a link to the chat are posted at Phair's website.
