Leahy delivers Celtic music to the masses

Celtic outfit Leahy --an act comprised of nine siblings--likes to plan ahead, as evidenced by a tour itinerary that stretches from this summer well into next year.

The Canadian group's schedule begins with a handful of July, August and September dates throughout Ontario and the Midwest, many of which are set to take place at Irish and Celtic festivals. A headlining theater run follows, with dates stretching from early October into late February.

The outing will support the group's forthcoming third album, a not-yet-named set that is slated to surface in late summer or early fall, according to Leahy's official website.

The Leahy siblings--Denise (vocals, guitar, piano), Siobheann (bass, fiddle, vocals), Donnell (fiddle), Maria (guitar, fiddle, vocals), Frank (drums, fiddle), Agnes (piano, fiddle), Doug (fiddle), Erin (keys, fiddle) and Angus (fiddle)--broke through on the Canadian music scene with their 1997 self-titled debut. The set garnered the group awards in the Best Instrumental Group and Best New Group categories at the 1997 Juno Awards (the Canadian equivalent of the GRAMMY® Awards), and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard World Music Charts in 1998.

The group's popularity ballooned when it signed on as the opening act for fellow Canadian musician Shania Twain during her 1998/1999 world tour. The group also appeared on two of Twain's 1999 television specials.

Leahy's future plans include a live DVD and a sheet-music booklet of its arrangements that will include traditional Celtic pieces found on the group's self-titled debut and original compositions found on its sophomore set, 2001's "Lakefield." No release date has been set for either project.
