Tom Petty stays busy with tour, television specials and live DVDs
Fans who can't make it out to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers during the group's current tour--which now stretches through the end of August--can still catch them live via two PBS in-concert programs.
On Thursday (7/3), PBS re-launches its popular "Soundstage" series--which last aired in 1985--with the first of two shows that capture Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers live in concert; the second show will air on July 10. Footage for both programs was shot in Chicago earlier this year, according to Petty's publicist.
During both shows, PBS will provide viewers with information on how to purchase the specials in DVD format.
Meanwhile, Petty and company recently opened their latest round of dates in support of last October's "The Last DJ," an album that debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
The group's summer road trip was originally scheduled to include a performance at the Bonnaroo NE festival, an event that has since been canceled. As a result, Petty and the Heartbreakers have lined up two co-headlining shows with Bob Dylan and his band on Aug. 9-10 at New Jersey's PNC Bank Center. (Dylan was also slated to appear at Bonnaroo NE.)
Petty and Dylan last played together at Madison Square Garden in 1992 as part of Dylan's 30th anniversary concert. Prior to that, the two had teamed for a world tour in 1986 and 1987, and recorded and performed together in The Traveling Wilbury's, an '80s-era supergroup that also featured the late George Harrison, the late Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne.
