Great White plots new headlining dates to benefit club-fire victims
Just days after scrapping a multi-act benefit tour due to "insurance issues," Great White is lining up shows of its own to benefit the survivors and families of victims of a deadly nightclub fire earlier this year.
Dubbed the "Help Us Help Our Own" tour, the outing kicks off later this month, and finds the band playing a mix of club and festival dates. The group plans to give a total of 41 concerts as part of the outing, but fewer than a dozen shows were confirmed at press time.
Proceeds from the tour--including all of the band's profits, all of the proceeds from a special memorial T-shirt and 10 percent of the promoters' and band's other merchandise proceeds--will go into the Station Family Fund, according to Great White's website.
The Station Family Fund is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization coordinated by survivors of a February fire at the Station nightclub in Rhode Island. The blaze, ignited by Great White's pyrotechnics display, killed 100 people--including Great White guitarist Ty Longley--and injured nearly 200 more.
Earlier this week, Great White, citing insurance troubles, canceled a planned triple-bill summer tour that was to have also featured fellow '80s-era rockers L.A. Guns and XYZ. Information posted at L.A. Guns' website explained that there were "some insurance issues for Great White whereas the venues were requiring them to purchase additional insurance and it just wasn't realistic."
According to published reports, insurers wouldn't grant Great White a blanket policy that would have covered it and its two opening acts.
