Hanson brothers unplug for acoustic club outing
Hanson , best known for the mid-90s pop hit "MMMbop," precedes its next studio album with an acoustic run that kicks off in early August.
The tour's first leg comprises about a dozen dates that stretch through the end of August. A yet-to-be announced second leg will contain more U.S. stops, as well as some Canadian dates, according to Hanson's website.
"This acoustic tour will be mainly in intimate club settings," group member Isaac Hanson said in a message posted on the band's website, "the reason of course being that we're playing acoustic music. What's the fun of playing in giant places when you can play a really intimate and cool [club show]?"
The outing comes in advance of "Underneath," a new album that the group hopes to release in September. No release date is set, as the band has been without a label since splitting with Island/Def Jam earlier this year.
When it does surface, "Underneath" will mark the group's first studio set since 2000's "This Time Around." Musicians who collaborated with the Hanson brothers on the new album include Matthew Sweet, Carole King, Greg Alexander (New Radicals), Ed Robertson (Barenaked Ladies) and Michelle Branch.
Hanson's website describes "Underneath" as a "diverse collection of self-produced and co-produced songs [that] are both lyrically stimulating and filled with classic musical hooks but the more mature sound is not without the trademark Hanson harmonies and classic soulful vocals."
Though fans will have to wait for the new studio set, they can pick up a new live CD that Hanson will be selling at the upcoming shows. The group recorded the set at the Church Studio in Tulsa, OK, on Sunday night (7/6). Members of the group's official fan club attended the private session.
New music also turns up on an exclusive CD that fan club members receive as part of their membership. The disc includes five previously unreleased tracks recorded during the "Underneath" sessions.
When they first burst onto the music scene in 1997 with "MMMBop," Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson were 16, 13 and 11 years old, respectively.
