John Mayer gets heavy after summer tour with Counting Crows

Singer-songwriter John Mayer will follow his current co-headlining run with the Counting Crows by releasing his sophomore major-label set, titled "Heavier Things."

The new album is due in stores on Sept. 9, while the first single, "Bigger Than My Body," hits radio stations in early August, according to Columbia Records. The song's music video will surface shortly thereafter.

Mayer shot the "Bigger Than My Body" video in California in late June, according to his website. Members of his official fan club, Local 83, were invited to attend the shoot.

Jack Joseph Puig--who has worked with Sheryl Crow, No Doubt, The Black Crowes and Hole--produced "Heavier Things." Puig mixed six tracks on Mayer's 2001 major-label debut, "Room for Squares."
Mayer recorded the new album in New York, and finished work on the set at Puig's Los Angeles headquarters, dubbed Ocean Way. In addition to "Bigger Than My Body," the set features several songs that Mayer has been performing live, including "Daughters," "Come Back to Bed" and "Something's Missing."

One week before "Heavier Things" hits the shelves, Mayer and the Counting Crows wrap up their already-in-progress co-headlining jaunt. Mayer has a website that is auctioning front-row tickets and meet-and-greet passes to many of the shows. Funds raised from the auction will support Mayer's Back To You Fund, which "seeks to distribute monies to a wide range of organizations which support programs in health care, education, support for the arts, and development of talent," according to the site.

Mayer is touring behind "Any Given Thursday," a live CD and DVD that he released in February. Also in February, the singer-songwriter took home the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance GRAMMY® for "Your Body Is a Wonderland," a track found on "Room for Squares."

Counting Crows are supporting last July's "Hard Candy," which includes the group's hit version of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi." Vanessa Carlton guests on the cut.
