Missy Elliott, Justin Timberlake, Johnny Cash up for multiple MTV honors
With eight nods, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott's video for "Work It" leads the field for the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, to be handed out on Aug. 28 at New York's Radio City Music Hall.
Justin Timberlake picked up seven nominations--five for "Cry Me a River" and two for "Rock Your Body"--and Johnny Cash 's music video for his remake of the Nine Inch Nails track "Hurt" got six nominations.
"I am overwhelmed by this great honor. I thank you all for thinking of me," Cash said in a statement. "It's been 48 years since I cut my first record and it's nice that people are still digging them up."
Radiohead, Jennifer Lopez, Queens of the Stone Age, The White Stripes, Christina Aguilera and Beyonce are vying for four awards each.
Comedian Chris Rock will host the 20th annual MTV Video Music Awards ceremony, which will air live on MTV. Christina Aguilera and Coldplay will be among the performers, with many others to be announced.
According to a press release, nominees were determined via ballots sent to a voting panel of about 500 people who represent "an exclusive industry group and viewers who determined the nominees for the telecast."
The public determines the winner in the Viewer's Choice field, which this year pits nominees Beyonce, Timberlake, Eminem and Good Charlotte.
