Wynton Marsalis jazzes things up with U.S. tour
Jazz luminary Wynton Marsalis has lined up plans to hit the road at the helm of both his Wynton Marsalis Septet and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.
Things get underway with a handful of late-August shows for the Wynton Marsalis Septet. The trumpeter and bandleader will then lead the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra on a month-long string of dates that kick off in mid-September; only four dates for the latter run were confirmed at press time. Another month of shows follow for the Wynton Marsalis Septet, beginning in mid-October.
Marsalis' summer plans also include recording his first album for Blue Note Records, with whom he signed in early June. Label head Bruce Lundvall first signed Marsalis to Columbia Records more than 20 years ago. The upcoming album, for which no release date has been set, will be Marsalis' first small-group jazz studio recording since 1999's "Marciac Suite."
"All Rise," Marsalis' most-recent release, surfaced last October. The two-disc set features over 200 performers, including Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, along with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, The Paul Smith Singers, California State University of Northridge's Northridge Singers and the Morgan State University Choir. Recorded just days after the Sept. 11 attacks, the group's work "blends the sounds of jazz, blues, classical and indigenous music from around the world to represent humanity's enduring ascendance over time," according to a press release.
Over the course of his career, Marsalis has won nine GRAMMY® Awards and is the only jazz musician to be honored with the Pulitzer Prize in Music (for 1997's "Blood on the Fields").
