Boz Scaggs makes DVD plans, lines up fall outing
Boz Scaggs finishes his summer roadwork by recording a two-night stand in San Francisco, and heads back out in late September for a fall tour of U.S. theaters.
On Aug. 26, Scaggs, backed by his jazz quartet, takes the stage at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall, where he will perform material from his latest album, "But Beautiful - Standards: Volume 1." The following night, Scaggs will deliver a set that will focus on "the many hits from throughout his enduring career," according to a press release.
Both nights will turn up on a special television broadcast and subsequent DVD; specific details have not yet surfaced.
A short break follows before Scaggs and company launch their fall outing, which begins with a three-night stand in Los Angeles on Sept. 21-23.
Released on May 6, "But Beautiful" is Scaggs' follow-up to 2001's "Dig." The set houses a collection of jazz standards that Scaggs performed with pianist/arranger Paul Nagel, saxophonist Eric Crystal, bassist John Shifflett and drummer Jason Lewis.
Scaggs first got the idea to record such an album after giving an acoustic fund-raising concert three years ago, for which he recruited Nagel, Crystal, Shifflett and Lewis.
"I thought it might be interesting to rework some of my songs with a more progressive treatment," he said in a statement. "Things opened up so nicely in rehearsal, I suggested we do a standard. We did the show, we liked it, the audience liked it, and that's where it all began."
"But Beautiful" is Scaggs' first release on his new label, Gray Cat Records. Streaming samples of five of the album's tracks are posted at his website.
Scaggs, whose recording career dates back almost 30 years, got his start in the mid '60s as a member of the Steve Miller Band. He released his self-titled solo debut in 1968.
In 1976, Scaggs--along with co-writer David Paich--won the Best R&B Song GRAMMY® for his song "Lowdown."
