Joe Strummer's posthumous 'Streetcore' due in October

"Streetcore," an album containing material that ex-Clash member Joe Strummer was working on with his band the Mescaleros before his sudden death in December, is set to reach stores on Oct. 21.

The set features eight original tracks and two covers: Bob Marley's "Redemption Song," produced by Rick Rubin, and the Bobby Charles song "Before I Grow Too Old," which Strummer re-titled "Silver and Gold."

According to Hellcat Records, director and Strummer's longtime Strummer Dick Rude has already shot a video for the album's lead track, "Coma Girl."

Strummer and the Mescaleros--Martin Slattery (keyboards, guitar, sax), Scott Shields (guitar, occasional drums and bass), Simon Stafford (bass) and Luke Bullen (drums)--began work on "Streetcore" in February of 2002, when they recorded "Redemption Song" and "Long Shadow" at Rubin's home in Los Angeles. The latter cut, written at Rubin's house over three days, was originally intended for submission to Johnny Cash to record, according to Hellcat.

Two of the original tracks that appear on "Streetcore"--"Coma Girl" and "Get Down Moses"--were part of Strummer's live show during his 2002 tour.

The album's final sessions took place over two weeks in December at Rockfield Studios in Wales, with the Mescaleros' Slattery and Shields at the production helm, according to a press release. They had planned to finish the album after a Christmas break.

Strummer died of a heart attack on Dec. 23. He was 50.

"When Scott and I went back into the studio, knowing we had to finish the album, we tried to remain as humanly faithful and respectful to what Joe would have wanted," Slattery said in a statement. "We hope we've made Joe proud," Shields added.

The album cover and sleeve were assembled using detailed notes and drawings that Strummer made several weeks before he died.
