Country musician John Anderson [ tickets ] underwent surgery on Sunday (8/31) after suffering a heart attack shortly before he was scheduled to perform a Saturday (8/30) concert.

The heart attack occurred while Anderson was at a Charleston, WV, hotel, according to The Charleston Gazette, and forced the singer to drop out of a Saturday night performance at the Sternwheel Regatta. The paper quoted Regatta director Sharon King as saying that Anderson apparently "tried to leave the hospital twice because he'd never missed a show before."

Doctors reportedly installed a stent and conducted an angioplasty during Anderson's surgery. He remained hospitalized on Tuesday (9/2), according to reports.

Anderson, a 48-year-old native of Florida, is best known for his 1983 hit "Swingin'," which was the best-selling country single in Warner Bros. history. His most-recent release is a 30-track best-of set titled "Anthology," which surfaced last year.
