Simon & Garfunkel unveil more reunion tour shows
With the Oct. 16 launch of their reunion tour quickly approaching, folk-rock icons Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel reveal more confirmed dates for the outing.
The pair's itinerary now stretches into mid-December, and includes multi-night stands in New York City and Boston. Meanwhile, second nights have been added to previously announced stops in Auburn Hills, MI; Chicago; St. Paul, MN; San Jose, CA; and Los Angeles.
Tickets for most shows are on sale now, while newly unveiled stops in Miami and Sunrise, FL, and Washington, DC, hit the box office on Saturday (10/4), according to the tour's official website.
During the outing--the duo's first major tour in two decades-- Simon & Garfunkel will perform both acoustically and backed by a seven-piece band. The pair has said that the bulk of its set list will come from the five Simon & Garfunkel studio albums, and may also include a few songs from their respective solo catalogs.
The long-estranged musicians' plans for a reunion surfaced in the wake of their February performance at the 2003 GRAMMY® Awards, at which they received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Taking the stage together for the first time in a decade, the duo opened the telecast by playing "The Sounds of Silence," one of their signature songs.
"I never actually thought that we'd lost our ability to sing together and have a blend," Simon told reporters at a press conference last month. "What we had was a friendship that was estranged, and the GRAMMYs was an opportunity to put that behind us. That's exactly what we did."
"This is a very deep, old friendship," Garfunkel said. "It's like family for the two of us. Our moms know each other."
The last Simon & Garfunkel tour took place in 1982 and 1983, and they also played a lengthy series of New York City concerts in 1993.
According to tour publicists, Simon & Garfunkel have sold more than 40 million albums as a duo in the U.S. alone. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
In conjunction with the tour, Columbia/Legacy will release "The Essential Simon and Garfunkel," a two-disc career retrospective, on October 10.
