Static-X returns with new album, tour
Midwestern industrial-metal quartet Static-X delivers its third full-length album this month, and backs it with a headlining tour on the U.S. club circuit.
The run kicks off on Oct. 7 in Tucson, AZ, and will also feature fellow rockers Soil, Skrape and Twisted Method.
The tour's launch coincides with the Oct. 7 release of "Shadow Zone," Static-X's follow-up to 2001's "Machine." The new album is the group's first with former Dope guitarist Tripp Eisen, who replaced original guitarist Koichi Fukuda shortly after "Machine" was completed.
"I can't compare this [new album] to the other two albums at all, because it was an entirely different experience this time," band namesake Wayne Static said in a statement. "Tripp was in there this time, and it was the first time I ever had a songwriting partner. It was a very refreshing experience, because he wrote some of the songs, and all I had to deal with was putting the vocals to them."
Eisen wasn't the group's only newcomer during the "Shadow Zone" recording sessions; drummer Josh Freese (A Perfect Circle) sat in for departed original drummer Ken Jay. Freese won't be touring with the group, however, as Static and fellow founding member Tony Campos recently enlisted drummer Nick Oshiro as Jay's permanent replacement.
"The chemistry is actually better than it ever was," Static said. "It's weird, because Koichi came in right before we got signed, did the record, toured, and he quit. In my mind, it's like, 'Was he even in the band?' He was in the band for like two years, and Tripp has been with us for more than three years now. We are all laid back, and with Nick, we made sure that we got someone in the band that fits in, that we will like touring with, and it feels good … Really good. The old songs still sound the same, maybe even better."
Fans can get an early listen to "Shadow Zone" via Static-X's website. The site also features the video for the first "Shadow Zone" single, "Only."
