Dixie Chicks set to release live album and DVD
The Dixie Chicks have set a Nov. 25 release date for "Top of the World," which the group recorded during its 2003 world tour of the same name.
The release will be available as a two-CD set featuring 22 tracks, as well as a DVD featuring 18 songs and a bonus video for "Top of the World."
The group culled material for "Top of the World" from recordings it made during its recently concluded 79-show tour of North America, Europe and Australia. The set features tracks from all three of the group's multi-platinum albums: 1998's "Wide Open Spaces," 1999's "Fly" and 2002's "Home."
The Dixie Chicks sold more than 1 million tickets for its 66 North American "Top of the World" tour dates, with 51 shows selling out on the first day of sales, according to a press release.
The tour's attendance was seemingly unaffected by the flap that singer Natalie Maines sparked in March, when, during a London concert, she voiced her opposition to President Bush's handling of the Iraqi conflict. The remark elicited an angry reaction from many American country-music fans, and resulted in several country-music radio stations boycotting the group's music.
Last month, German magazine Spiegel quoted Dixie Chicks member Martie Maguire as saying that her group doesn't "feel part of the country music scene any longer," and that she was disappointed that more country acts didn't come to her group's defense. She reportedly added that the support the group did receive came from "others, like Bruce Springsteen," and that the group now considers itself "part of the big rock-and-roll family."
In a recent letter to fans that she posted at the group's website, Maines
said that Maguire never said that the group was now part of the "rock-and-roll family," adding that, "I wasn't aware we had made a rock album."
Maines also wrote jokingly that "country radio called and wants to know if it's true that [the Dixie Chicks are] leaving country music? This one must be a prank call. I mean, how can you leave a party now when the hosts had shown you to the door six months ago?"
