CMT expands Johnny Cash memorial show to two-and-a-half hours

The relatively small capacity of Nashville's Ryman Auditorium meant that fewer than 2,500 people saw this month's Johnny Cash memorial concert in person, but a much larger audience can watch the show's highlights on a CMT special that debuts this weekend.

The program, which was originally scheduled to run for two hours, has been expanded by 30 minutes, the Country Music Television cable network announced this week. Dubbed "Johnny Cash Memorial Tribute: A Celebration of Friends and Family," it airs on CMT on Saturday (11/15) at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific Time, and will be rebroadcast several times in the future.

The memorial concert, hosted by actor Tim Robbins, was taped on Nov. 10. Among the night's performers were Rosanne Cash , Kris Kristofferson, Kid Rock, Brooks & Dunn, Sheryl Crow, John Mellencamp, George Jones, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Jr., Rodney Crowell and Marty Stuart.

"Throughout the years, there will be many tributes to my father and his music, but this is the essential one," Rosanne Cash said in a statement. "It is the tribute that came purely from the love of his friends and family."

Among the highlights that will appear on the CMT special are Rosanne Cash's performance of "I Still Miss Someone"; Sheryl Crow's rendition of the Trent Reznor-penned song "Hurt," which Cash covered on his most-recent album; and Brooks & Dunn and Carlene Carter's version of "Jackson."

Former Vice President Al Gore spoke of Cash's humanity during the tribute concert. Bono, Whoopi Goldberg, Ray Charles, Trent Reznor and Dan Rather reflected on Cash's life in taped messages.
