Michael Jackson launches website to counter media onslaught
Michael Jackson , who last week was arrested and charged with child molestation, has set up a website that he plans to use as an official means of communicating with the public about his case.
In a new letter addressed to his "fans, friends and family" that is posted at the website, Jackson writes: "As you know, the charges recently directed at me are terribly serious. They are, however, predicated on a big lie. This will be shown in court, and we will be able to put this horrible time behind us."
Jackson goes on to say that, on the advice of his attorneys, he will be limited in what he can say about the case.
"There will be times when I cannot comment at all. No doubt, this will be frustrating for all of us.
"For that reason, I have set up this website to serve as a source of official communications on my case. Any statement that does not appear on this website must be considered unauthorized."
The site is Jackson's response to the incessant media coverage of the case, which has included information attributed to people whom Jackson says are "being identified in the mass media as my friends, spokespeople, and attorneys. With few exceptions, most of them are simply filling a desperate void in our culture that equates visibility with insight."
Jackson further explained that his camp "will not engage in speculation" and "will not provide running commentary on every new development or allegation du jour. We intend to try our case in the courtroom, not in the public or the media."
On Friday (11/21), Jackson surrendered to the Santa Barbara Sheriff's office, which charged him with multiple counts of child molestation. Jackson posted $3 million bail, and is due back in court for his arraignment on Jan. 9.
The Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department and the District Attorney's office previously announced plans to issue their official statements about the Jackson case via their websites.
