Elvis Costello backs 'North' with short round of live dates

Elvis Costello heads out early next year on a brief North American road trip that supports this year's "North."

Costello plans to launch the run in Florida on Feb. 19, and work his way from east to west before wrapping things up in San Francisco on March 11. A total of 13 shows are planned throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Released in September, "North"--an album of ballads--debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Jazz Albums chart, and remained there for five weeks. Costello recorded the set in New York City during April and May of this year with co-producer Kevin Kline, who also engineered and mixed the album.

Costello's core band of pianist Steve Nieve, drummer Peter Erskine and bassist Mike Formanek backed him on "North," and were augmented on several numbers by a 48-piece ensemble comprised of a rhythm section, horn nonet and 28 string players. Costello arranged and conducted all orchestrations, according to a press release.

Nieve will join Costello on the road on all dates, and the duo will be joined by string-ensemble The Brodsky Quartet during the tour's Feb. 24 stop in Nashville, Feb. 26 stop in New York and Feb. 27 stop in Boston.

Born Declan Patrick McManus, Costello released his first album in 1977. Earlier this year, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
