Lynyrd Skynyrd's tour plans continue to grow
Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd keep a busy pace with their in-progress tour, which now stretches deep into the summer.
The group, which kicked off its latest road trip last week, has a non-stop string of shows set through mid-March, and is beginning to fill up its summer dance card, with dates set in June, July and August. A pair of April dates is also set.
No word yet on who Skynyrd will be touring with, but the group plans to make an announcement in the "upcoming weeks" about "an exciting summer tour package," according to its website.
The summer dates will support "Lynyrd Skynyrd Lyve," a CD due out in June. The album is the audio version of last year's "Lynyrd Skynyrd Lyve: The Vicious Cycle Tour, Celebrating 30 Years of Rock 'N Roll" DVD and PayPerView special; the set captures the group's July 11, 2003 performance at the AmSouth Amphitheatre near Nashville.
The busy tour schedule in part makes up for a somewhat disappointing 2003; the group was forced to cancel most of a planned co-headlining tour with Sammy Hagar after guitarist Gary Rossington--who underwent quintuple-bypass surgery in February--was diagnosed in late July with what doctors first diagnosed as "medical fatigue," but later determined was a mild seizure.
The group had planned to launch a headlining tour of its own in mid-September, but pushed things back until the beginning of October after doctors advised Rossington to continue resting at home.
Skynyrd's most-recent studio set is last May's "Vicious Cycle," which features the cut "Dead Man Walkin'." The group will release the song to radio stations on March 8, according to its website.
