Nickel Creek logs some studio time before returning to the road

Acoustic trio Nickel Creek , currently in Los Angeles working on its follow-up to 2002's Grammy-winning set "This Side," heads back out on the road in March to play a mix of clubs and theaters.

No release date has been scheduled for the new album, which will be the group's third. "This Side" and the group's self-titled debut are both gold certified, signifying U.S. shipment of more than 500,000 copies each in the U.S.

"We've done substantial construction and reconstruction to six songs that we feel like are now in a solid place," the band's Sara Watkins wrote in an online journal on Nickel Creek's official website. "But I wouldn't be surprised if, upon reexamination, we tear into them again and perform more surgery."

Last year, "This Side" won the Grammy award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.

Nickel Creek--Watkins (strings, vocals), her brother Sean Watkins (guitar, vocals) and Chris Thile (mandolin, vocals)--released its self-titled debut in 2000. Prior to the album's release, the group had spent a number of years as a quartet, rounded out by Thile's father, Scott (bass).

Bluegrass icon Alison Krauss has produced both of the group's albums.
